How to light a selfie video with just a window
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerFace the window, stand about an arm's length or two from it, and keep the brightest light in front of you, not behind. If the sun is hitting you directly, draw a thin curtain.
Face it
Light in front of you fills your face. Light behind you turns you into a silhouette.
Side light for depth
Turn 45° away from the window for a more three-dimensional look. Add a white wall or a sheet of paper on the dark side to soften shadows.
Avoid mixed light
A warm lamp plus cool daylight makes skin look patchy. Turn the lamp off.
Time of day
Overcast days are the most flattering. Direct midday sun is the harshest; diffuse it with a curtain.
