Vertical or landscape: which should you film?
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerFilm vertical for short-form social apps and landscape for YouTube and TVs. If you need both, keep the action in the middle of the frame so either crop works.
Where it'll be watched
- Short-form social feeds: vertical 9:16.
- YouTube, websites, TVs: landscape 16:9.
- Feed posts: 4:5 or 1:1.
Planning for both
Cropping 16:9 down to 9:16 keeps only about a third of the width. Use the crop calculator to see exactly how much survives, and keep faces and text central.
Or record both at once
Dual-Format capture, which makes a landscape version from the same recording, is built into Music Wide Selfie and still being tested. It isn't released yet.
