How to make a day-in-the-life video on your phone

Short answerPlan five to eight moments, film two or three short clips of each (wide, close-up, you talking), keep clips to a few seconds, and edit them in order with music and a few lines of voiceover.

Plan the moments

Write down five to eight things you’ll do: wake up, coffee, commute, work, gym, dinner, wind down. You don’t need to film everything; you need a few moments that show the shape of the day.

Get three kinds of shot

  • Wide: where you are.
  • Close-up: hands, coffee, keys, a screen.
  • You: a few seconds talking to camera about what’s happening.

Keep clips short

Three to five seconds per clip is plenty. Short clips make editing fast and keep the video moving.

Edit in order

  1. Drop clips in time order.
  2. Cut anything that doesn’t add something.
  3. Add music underneath.
  4. Add two or three short voiceover lines or captions.

Respect other people

Ask before filming friends, colleagues or anyone at work. Keep strangers out of shot or blur them.

Questions

How long should it be?

For short-form apps, under a minute. For YouTube, whatever the day needs; most are 5–15 minutes.
